Alice hires a professional negotiator to obtain the release of her engineer husband, who has been kidnapped by anti-government guerrillas in South America.
For her, it’s personal. For him, it’s a contract.
My Two Cents
Proof of Life offers a grounded take on hostage rescue operations, blending emotional stakes with geopolitical tension. It’s less about action spectacle and more about the psychological toll on everyone involved. If you’re in the mood for something tense but human, this one quietly delivers.
A solid, engaging thriller that respects its subject matter. It doesn’t always maintain momentum, but the performances, especially the emotional weight carried by the characters, keep it worthwhile.
I first watched this in 2001. I went into this movie blind, renting the VCD from Video City solely because of my crush on Meg Ryan.
“Are you in love with this woman? Terry… I don’t know what you’re holding out hope for.
That you’re gonna save this lady’s husband, and she’s gonna see the light and run off with you?
It doesn’t work that way. You know that.“
