A Few Notes
I first heard Upside Down by Two Mind Cracks on the radio back in the late 80’s. But I ended up appreciating it more years later, when a friend of ours played it on the guitar during our college days.
This 1986 track is a classic slice of sophisti-pop that captures the frantic, dizzying state of a relationship that is falling apart while the physical and emotional attraction is still very much alive.
The lyrics describe a state of romantic confusion. The narrator is caught in a loop of overthinking, oscillating between wanting to fix the relationship and wanting to walk away. The phrase “Upside Down” serves as a metaphor for the disorientation caused by someone who has a powerful hold over you, even when the relationship itself feels “lost.”
I’ve been spending some time thinking of you and I
Don’t know if I can really make it tonight
I lie awake in the dark, calm down then I start
Thinkin’ about you is almost breakin’ my heart
I don’t know where I went wrong or what’s going on
Baby, I feel like a lover tonight
Should I stay? Should I go? Well, I really don’t know
Lately I’ve been missin’ you so
Maybe you don’t understand
Our love lies lost but
You’re still holdin’ my hand
Oh, and then you walk away
Just as I, I wanted to say
You’re turnin’ me on, you turn me around
You turn my whole world upside down
You’re turnin’ me on, you turn me around
You turn my whole world upside down
Every time I hurt you, well, it’s hurtin’ me too
Don’t know if I can really stay here tonight
Tired of thinkin’ of you and everything that you do
Tell me, what am I supposed to do?
Well, I just wanted to say that I need you today
Tell me it’s all gonna work out all right
Don’t know where I should start but with all of my heart
Baby, let me be your lover tonight
Maybe you don’t understand
Our love lies lost but
You’re still holdin’ my hand
Oh, and then you walk away
Just as I, I wanted to say
You’re turnin’ me on, you turn me around
You turn my whole world upside down
You’re turnin’ me on, you turn me around
You turn my whole world upside down
You know you turn me upside down
You know you turn me upside down
You’re turnin’ me on, you turn me around
You turn my whole world upside down
You’re turnin’ me on, you turn me around
You turn my whole world upside down
You’re turnin’ me on, you turn me around
You turn my whole world upside down
You’re turnin’ me on, you turn me around
You turn my whole world upside down

My neighbors listen to great music… whether they want to or not.
This project is a lot like a toddler: it’s messy, it keeps me up at night, and I’m constantly apologizing for its behavior in public.
My favorite way to help is by providing moral support from a safe, comfortable distance.
