Coinbase Commercial Breakdown

Director Oscar Hudson joins Dylan Hahn to break down his Coinbase campaign for the Oscars – a project that brings a video game world to life using mostly practical effects.

He explains how the team transformed digital game logic into real-world design by using printed textures, flattened costumes, miniature sets, and precise camera work to create a strangely convincing, game-like environment on camera. They also dive into the use of isometric camera angles, extensive materials testing, and movement inspired by NPC behavior.

Instead of relying heavily on CGI, the production leaned on clever, hands-on techniques, proving that simple physical solutions can deliver surprisingly complex and visually striking results.
