10 Random Trivia Facts You Probably Didn’t Expect

Random trivia facts are one of the easiest ways to learn something new in just a few seconds. From animals with unusual abilities to bizarre stories from history, the world is full of strange and fascinating details. Here are some trivia that might surprisingly be useful in your everyday life.

1. Bananas are berries, but strawberries are NOT berries.

Botanically speaking (wow!), a berry is a fleshy fruit that develops from the single ovary of a flower and contains one or more seeds — which perfectly fits the definition of a banana.

Meanwhile, a strawberry develops from multiple ovaries of a single flower. Those tiny seed-like things around the strawberry actually represent individual fruitlets, which is why it is classified as an aggregate fruit.

2. Octopuses have three hearts.

An octopus is probably laughing at the song “Sana Dalawa Ang Puso Ko” (I Wish I Had Two Hearts). It actually has two branchial hearts that pump blood to the gills, and one larger systemic heart that pumps oxygen-rich blood to the rest of its body.

3. The inventor of the Pringles can was buried in a Pringles can.

Frederic “Fred” Baur was an organic chemist who designed the iconic Pringles can. When he died in 2008, he had a personal request to be buried in his own invention.

His children fulfilled this by placing part of his ashes inside an original-flavor Pringles container, while the rest was placed in an urn. They buried both together.

4. A group of flamingos is called a “flamboyance.”

There is a village in Norway called Hell, located in the municipality of Stjørdal. The name comes from the Old Norse word hellir, which means “overhang” or “cliff cave.”

The village is a minor tourist attraction because of its name. Maybe whenever it snows there, they say: “Hell freezes over.”

7. Koalas have fingerprints that are almost identical to humans.

Koalas

Koala fingerprints are so similar to human fingerprints that even forensic experts sometimes have difficulty when playing the game of “which one is different?”

The swirls, loops, and whorls on a koala’s fingertips are almost identical to ours, even down to the microscopic details.

8. Cows have best friends.

Baka

Cows have best friends, and they can become stressed when separated from them.

9. Butterflies can taste with their feet.

Butterflies can taste using specialized chemoreceptors (I didn’t know that either) located on their feet.

These receptors help them identify plants where they can lay their eggs, or find essential nutrients they need. They don’t need to lick things – they just step on them.

10. Goats have rectangular pupils.

Goat

The rectangular pupils of goats are a unique trait that gives them a nearly 320-degree panoramic field of vision.

This helps them quickly detect predators coming from almost any direction, even while they are looking down and eating grass.
