During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Bring Him Home

My Two Cents

The Martian turns a life-or-death situation into something strangely uplifting. It’s a survival movie powered not by fear, but by wit, science, and stubborn human resilience. If you’ve ever enjoyed watching someone solve impossible problems step by step, this one delivers in the most satisfying way.

It’s incredibly rewatchable because the tension comes from problem-solving rather than twists, so knowing what happens doesn’t ruin the experience. You can jump in at almost any point and still enjoy watching things get figured out. The balance of humor and realism keeps it engaging.

Mark Watney (Matt Damon):I’ve been thinking about laws on Mars. There’s an international treaty saying no country can lay claim to anything that’s not on Earth. And by another treaty, if you’re not in any country’s territory maritime law applies. So Mars is international waters.

Now, NASA is an American non-military organization. It owns the Hab. But the second I walk outside, I’m in international waters.

So here’s the cool part, I’m about to leave for the Schiaparelli Crater where I’m gonna commandeer the Ares 4 lander. Nobody explicitly gave me permission to do this and they can’t until I’m on board the Ares 4. So that means I’m gonna be taking a craft over in international waters without permission, which, by definition, makes me a pirate.

Mark Watney, Space Pirate.

Who would enjoy this?

  • Fans of smart, science-driven survival stories
  • People who enjoy optimistic sci-fi instead of doom-and-gloom space movies
  • Anyone who appreciates dry humor in high-stress situations
  • NASA geeks or those fascinated by space exploration

Who might not vibe with this?

  • Those who find scientific jargon tiring or overwhelming
